徳島県の田舎に行くと、ブランコが立つ小さな神社がある。だが不思議なことに子供たちがそれで遊んでいる気配はない。また明らかに老朽化したものが、撤去されず残されていたりする。興味を覚えた私は2013年から10年間にわたり、徳島県全域の小さな神社を周ってブランコを探し続けた。

小さな神社が建てられた理由は、自然災害や疫病などの、遠い過去の不幸な出来事によるものが多い。その場所に神を祀ることで安寧を祈願したのだ。そんな場所で、誰に揺らされることなくブランコは静かに佇んでいる。

Going to the countryside of Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, you will find small shrines with a swing set. Strangely, however, there are no signs of children playing on them. There are also clearly dilapidated equipment that have not been removed and are left behind. Intrigued by that, I have visited small shrines throughout Tokushima in search of swings for ten years since 2013.

Small shrines were often built because of unfortunate events in the distant past, such as natural disasters or epidemics. People prayed for peace and tranquility by enshrining a deity at each location. In such places, swings stand quietly and unused.
